What Baseboard Repair Actually Costs

Yes, baseboards can absolutely be repaired. Whether you're dealing with a chipped corner, a section the dog got to, water damage along the floor line, or cracks that opened up as the house settled, Hundredfold Services assesses what you actually have before touching a single piece of trim. Baseboard repair cost depends on the extent of damage, the trim profile you have, and whether the existing paint needs to be matched, but you don't need to guess at numbers over the phone. Call us at (318) 348-4317 and we'll walk through it with you.

The work itself falls into two categories: patching and replacing. Small surface damage, hairline cracks, and minor chips can often be filled with the right compound, sanded smooth, and finished so cleanly you won't find the repair without a flashlight held at an angle. Larger sections with rot, impact damage, or profile loss need to come out and be replaced with matching material. We source the trim, cut the joints, and paint or prime to blend with your existing wall finish. Cost drivers include linear footage, whether the profile is a standard stock piece or something that needs to be sourced or milled, and how many corners the run covers. Every job is different, contact Hundredfold Services for an accurate estimate. If the baseboard damage connects to paint scuffs or wall issues, we handle paint touch-ups and trim repair in the same visit.

How We Approach Every Baseboard Repair

We match the profile first. Everything else follows from that.

Owner Dominique Willis starts every baseboard job by identifying the trim profile you have. That sounds simple, but it's where most patch jobs go wrong. If the replacement material doesn't match your existing profile, the repair reads as a repair no matter how good the finish work is. We bring sample profiles on the first visit, measure your existing trim's height and shape, and confirm the match before cutting anything. From there, damaged sections come out cleanly so the new material seats flush against the wall and floor. We don't nail into the face unless the profile requires it, and we fill, sand, and spot-prime every fastener point before finish painting. The result looks like the room was built that way.

Common Repairs

Baseboard Problems We Fix Regularly

These are the situations that come through the door most often.

01

Chipped or Broken Corners

Outside corners take the most abuse. A doorstop that missed, a vacuum that connected too hard, or a move where furniture caught the corner. We rebuild the profile with filler on minor chips or replace the mitered corner section entirely when the damage is structural.

02

Pet and Pest Damage

Chewed baseboard is one of the more common calls we get. Dogs in particular go after the lower edge. If the damage is isolated to a short run, we cut the section out and splice in matching material. It's cleaner than trying to build up a chewed edge with filler.

03

Water Damage and Swelling

Baseboards near exterior walls, bathrooms, and sliding doors absorb moisture over time. MDF profiles swell and delaminate. We remove the damaged section, check the wall behind it for moisture before installing new material, and seal the bottom edge to the floor to reduce the chance of it happening again.

04

Cracks Along Caulk Lines

As a house moves seasonally, the caulk joint between the baseboard top and the wall opens up. We clean out the old caulk, apply paintable caulk with the right durometer for your wall material, and smooth it before it skins over. A fresh paint line over a clean caulk joint disappears completely.

05

Paint Buildup and Rough Finishes

Older homes sometimes have baseboards with six or eight layers of paint on them, losing the profile detail under the buildup. We strip the surface back or replace sections where the profile is lost, so your trim looks sharp again rather than rounded and muddy.

06

Gaps Between Baseboard and Floor

If new flooring was installed without resetting the baseboard height, or the flooring settled, you'll see a gap that collects dust and looks unfinished. We reset the baseboard to the correct height and add shoe molding where the profile allows, bridging the gap cleanly.

Our Process

From Assessment to Final Paint, Step by Step

Three moves. No surprises.

  1. 01

    Profile Match and Damage Assessment

We identify your existing trim profile, measure the damaged run, and decide on the right repair method before a single tool comes out. Patching or replacing, we confirm the approach with you first.

  2. 02

    Precision Removal and Installation

Damaged sections come out without tearing the wall or floor. New material goes in tight, mitered at the corners, and nailed to studs or blocking. Every joint gets wood filler or caulk, sanded smooth before primer touches it.

  3. 03

    Finish Work and Cleanup

Spot priming, paint matching, and a final inspection under raking light. We clean up before we leave. The only thing that should be visible is the repaired baseboard looking like it was never touched.

When to Repair vs. When to Replace the Whole Run

chipped or broken corners work, professional service in Austin, TX
Honestly, most baseboard damage doesn't require replacing an entire room's worth of trim. A single damaged section, a chipped corner, a soft spot from moisture. Those are repairs, not replacements, and replacing everything when a splice would do the job is a waste of your money. We won't push you toward a full replacement unless the profile is discontinued and we genuinely can't match it, or the damage runs so far along a wall that cutting out individual sections would cost more in labor than running new material. If the latter is true, we'll tell you plainly, show you the math, and let you decide. We don't subcontract this work out. Dominique Willis handles the assessment and the repair personally, which means the person who quoted you is the one on the floor with the saw. That matters when the job requires judgment calls about matching a 1970s profile on a slab-built home in Garland versus a contemporary builder-grade run in a newer Frisco neighborhood. The two jobs look completely different, and they're priced and executed differently too.

What Drives Baseboard Repair Cost Up or Down

  1. 01

Linear Footage and Number of Sections

A single damaged corner costs far less than three separate runs in different rooms. Each section requires setup, matching, and finish work, so volume matters.

  2. 02

    Profile Availability

Stock profiles from a lumberyard are inexpensive and easy to match. Discontinued, custom, or ornate profiles may require sourcing from a millwork supplier or hand-shaping, which adds cost and lead time.

  3. 03

    Paint Matching and Finish Quality

A simple white prime-and-paint is straightforward. Matching an aged cream, a satin finish over semi-gloss, or custom trim colors requires more time per linear foot and occasionally a second coat cycle.

  4. 04

    Underlying Wall or Floor Condition

If removing a damaged baseboard reveals a soft wall, mold, or a flooring gap that needs to be addressed first, that's additional scope. We identify these issues before quoting so there are no surprises mid-job.

Baseboard Repair Connects to the Rest of the Room

  1. 01

    Wall Paint Scuffs

Baseboard removal sometimes lifts paint. We spot-prime and touch up the wall face so the finished area looks complete, not half-done.

  2. 02

    Trim and Casing

Door casing and window trim get the same abuse as baseboards. If those need attention while we're already set up with primer and paint, we add them to the visit.

  3. 03

    Shoe Molding and Transitions

Where the baseboard meets new or refinished flooring, a quarter-round or shoe molding covers the gap cleanly. We install and finish it to match the baseboard profile.

Baseboard Repair: Frequently Asked Questions

Can baseboards be repaired, or do they always need to be replaced?
Most baseboards can be repaired rather than replaced. Surface damage, cracks, and chips respond well to two-part wood filler or epoxy-based compounds, sanded flush and painted. Structural damage, rot, or missing profile sections typically require replacement of that specific run. The call between the two methods comes down to whether we can restore the surface to the same profile or whether the material integrity is gone.
How much does baseboard repair cost for a typical job?
Baseboard repair cost varies with the length of the damaged run, the trim profile, and the finish requirements. A single chipped corner is a short job. A full room with water-damaged MDF and a discontinued profile is a different scope entirely. We don't publish flat rates because a number that fits one job misleads you on another. Contact Hundredfold Services at (318) 348-4317 for an accurate estimate on your specific situation.
How do you permanently fix cracks in a baseboard without them reopening?
The key is addressing why the crack opened in the first place. Most cracks in painted baseboard happen at the caulk line where the trim meets the wall, and they reopen because the wrong caulk was used or because the joint was painted over without caulking first. We clean out the old material, apply a flexible paintable caulk rated for interior trim movement, and smooth it before it skins. Done right, it holds through seasonal humidity cycles without reopening.
My baseboard is chipped. Do you match the existing profile, or does it all have to come out?
We match the profile whenever possible. For isolated chips, we rebuild the shape with a two-part wood filler, shape it to the correct profile while it's still workable, then sand and prime. If the chip is at a corner and the material is MDF, the corner itself sometimes needs to be spliced with a matching piece rather than built up with filler, because MDF doesn't hold shaped filler as reliably as solid wood on an outside corner.
MDF baseboards swelled from moisture. Can they be repaired, or do they have to be replaced?
Swollen MDF almost always needs to be replaced. Unlike solid wood, MDF doesn't return to its original dimension after absorbing water. The fiber structure breaks down and the surface delaminates. We remove the affected section, check the wall cavity and subfloor edge for remaining moisture, and install new matching material with a sealed bottom edge. Repainting over a swollen MDF baseboard without replacing it is money spent twice.
Do you handle baseboard repair in older homes with non-standard profiles?
Yes. Older homes built with taller, more detailed baseboard profiles are one of the more common situations we deal with. If the profile is still being milled by a regional supplier, we source it. If it's discontinued, we assess whether a close-match stock profile is acceptable, or whether the section should be custom-milled. We'll tell you the realistic options and the cost difference between them before any work starts.
