A cabinet maker works in a shop, building cabinet boxes to spec before they're delivered and installed. A carpenter works on site and handles the full range of finish woodwork -- trim, built-ins, vent hoods, repairs, and custom surrounds. For most homeowners, you need a carpenter: someone who can build to the actual dimensions of your specific wall, ceiling, and existing cabinetry, not to a standard factory size.
Can a custom vent hood be built to match painted shaker cabinets?
Yes, and this is one of the most common requests we get. A shaker-style vent hood uses flat-panel MDF with applied rails and stiles to match the door profile. The surround gets primed and painted to match your cabinet color. When the scribing and finish work are done correctly, it looks like it came with the kitchen. The key is matching the rail width and reveal of your existing doors exactly.
How do I know if my cabinet doors need hinge replacement or just adjustment?
Start with adjustment. Most modern concealed hinges have three axes of adjustment built in -- height, depth, and lateral position -- and a door that won't close flush can often be corrected in under five minutes without any new hardware. If the hinge is visibly bent, cracked at the mounting plate, or the door sags even after adjustment, replacement makes more sense. We check adjustment first before recommending new hardware.
What wood profile works best for a vent hood over a gas range?
Profile choice is mostly aesthetic, but the material underneath it matters for heat tolerance. A straightforward build on a standard-height ceiling with a flat-panel or simple shaker profile typically takes one full day from raw material to installed and caulked. More complex builds with stacked crown molding, applied detail work, or high ceilings that require scaffold or tall ladders take longer. If paint or stain is part of the scope, that adds time for drying between coats. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we've seen the space.
Can you repair cabinetry damaged by water or impact without replacing the whole cabinet?
Often, yes. A swollen cabinet bottom from a supply line leak, a cracked face frame from an impact, or a split drawer box can usually be repaired in place. The exception is when the box itself has been saturated long enough for the particle board or plywood to delaminate through the full thickness -- at that point, repair is cosmetic at best.
