Common Questions About Electrical Work

Why would an outlet stop working if the breaker isn't tripped?
GFCI outlets protect other outlets on the same circuit. If a GFCI outlet in your bathroom or kitchen tripped, it can cut power to outlets in other rooms without tripping the breaker. Check every GFCI outlet in the house and press the reset button on any that show a tripped status. If that doesn't restore power, the outlet itself may have failed and needs to be replaced.
What's an old work electrical box, and when do I need one?
An old work box, sometimes called a remodel box, is designed to be installed in an existing wall without removing the drywall. It uses built-in clips that grab the back of the drywall when you tighten the screws. You need one any time you're adding a new outlet or switch in a finished wall. Metal old work boxes are more durable and are generally preferred in walls with metal studs.
Can a ceiling fan be installed where there's currently just a light fixture?
Yes, but only if the existing electrical box is rated for a fan. Standard light fixture boxes aren't designed to support the weight and movement of a ceiling fan. We check the box first and replace it with a fan-rated brace box if needed. Skipping that step is the reason most ceiling fan wobble problems happen. What's the difference between a GFCI outlet and a standard outlet?

Is it safe to replace a light switch myself?
Technically, yes, if you turn off the breaker first, confirm the power is off with a non-contact voltage tester, and you're dealing with a standard single-pole switch. Where it gets complicated is three-way switches, which control one fixture from two locations, and four-way switches. The wiring on those isn't intuitive, and a wrong connection can damage the switch or the fixture.
