What should go down before installing vinyl plank flooring?
The subfloor needs to be clean, dry, and flat to within 3/16 of an inch over an 8-foot span before LVP goes down. Depending on the existing surface, that may mean scraping adhesive residue, filling low spots with floor leveling compound, or pulling up a layer of old vinyl tile. A moisture barrier or underlayment typically goes on top of that. Skipping any of these steps causes the planks to flex, peak at seams, or shift over time.
